I'm making absolutely no progress :-(
So I started from scratch again (thank VMware !)
- OS: CentOS 5, kernel 2.6.18-8.1.6.el5 (same as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5)
- openssl & openssl-devel are rpm-installed
[root at wac-srv-pent-03 ~]# rpm -q --all | grep ssl
openssl-0.9.8b-8.3.el5
docbook-style-dsssl-1.79-4.1
openssl-devel-0.9.8b-8.3.el5
- Ruby is installed (from source)
[root at wac-srv-pent-03 ~]# ruby --version
ruby 1.8.6 (2007-03-13 patchlevel 0) [i686-linux]
- Ruby openssl is also installed from source
[root at wac-srv-pent-03 ~]# gem list
*** LOCAL GEMS ***
jruby-openssl (0.0.3)
JRuby Openssl
sources (0.0.1)
This package provides download sources for remote gem installation
I must be missing something, but what ??? (I'm starting now to REALLY tear
my hair off !!)

I am pretty sure that removing those comment lines will embed the module
into ruby itself instead of building a dynamic module. You should be able
to just ./configure --prefix=/usr && make && make install. This will work
as long as the openssl-dev package has been installed.
